PH 5-4½ & PH 6½-6 - Pendant Light

Origin Denmark

Poul Henningsen, a Danish designer and architect, developed the PH 4/4 shade system in 1925 to reduce glare and create soft, diffused light by layering multiple shades.

The four-shade system was retired during the 1940s and revived by Danish architects Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen in 1979 for the Charlottenborg exhibition building in Copenhagen, preserving Henningsen’s timeless design.

Profile

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen, born in Copenhagen in 1894 to Danish writers Agnes Henningsen and Carl Ewald, initially trained as a functionalist architect before making his mark as a pioneering lighting designer. His shift to lighting design brought a modern sensibility to the field, most notably with his groundbreaking PH Lamp, which redefined how light interacts with its environment by addressing glare with his three-shade design system, setting new standards for modern illumination.

Henningsen's collaboration with Louis Poulsen, which began in 1924, was transformative, blending practical functionality with artistic innovation. His meticulous approach to glare-free illumination and the emotional resonance of light helped set the foundation for modern lighting design. Today, Louis Poulsen honors his legacy by integrating his visionary principles into their designs, ensuring that his groundbreaking concepts continue to influence and shape the brand’s lighting philosophy.
